Pharmacist/Attorney & Toxicology Consultant
Stephen graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA with a degree in pharmaceutical sciences and started his career as a clinical pharmacist. During that career, he attended New England Law in Boston and attained a Juris Doctor degree. He is a member of the Bar in Massachusetts, Maine & NJ. He was a founding partner in the firm of Beaton & Drapeau, LLC located in Gloucester, MA before relocating to his home state of Maine in 2005. He is currently the founding and managing member of Coastal Legal, LLC based in Freeport, Maine.
Stephen has supported defense attorneys, prosecutors and civil attorneys on their cases that involve both prescription and illegal drugs. He can help analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a case and with his legal background can help advise attorneys on how to position their arguments to achieve the most successful outcomes.
Toxicological Chemist
After graduating with a bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry, Michael joined the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Toxicology Laboratory (ME) and served there for 33 years as a forensic toxicologist and ultimately as the laboratory supervisor.
During his tenure in the ME Office, he acquired a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Paralegal Studies from Sullivan University, a Master’s Degree in Forensic Toxicology and a second Master is in Drug Chemistry from the University of Florida. Michael is certified as a Toxicological Chemist by the National Registry of Certified Chemists in Washington, D.C.
After retirement from the Medical Examiner’s Office, he began teaching at Eastern Kentucky University in the Forensic Science Program. He taught chemistry and toxicology in addition to other classes. Within these classes there was discussion about the effects of drugs on individuals and the impact on performance of various
tasks.
Michael also serves as a teaching assistant in the University of Florida online forensic science program. In addition, he is an assistant professor with the University of Kentucky in the Professional Master’s Degree Program in the Department of Toxicology and Cancer Biology.
Michael has consulted on toxicology cases since 2013. He has supported attorneys on legal matters in Maine, Kentucky and other states on both state and federal levels. He has been qualified as an expert witness in forensic toxicology in several jurisdictions.
Pharmacist & Toxicology Consultant
Dr. Hailey Choi is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) School of Pharmacy in Boston, MA. She is an ambulatory care pharmacy specialist with Board Certification in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy and is also a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. She practices at the Primary Care Center at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, providing medication therapy management and chronic disease management, with a focus on diabetes and obesity. Additionally, she offers experiential education for pharmacy students and pharmacy residents at the clinic while teaching classes that involve case-based learning and therapeutics of diabetes and obesity at the School of Pharmacy.
Prior to joining MCPHS University, she was an Associate Professor at the University of New England (UNE) School of Pharmacy in Portland, ME. At UNE School of Pharmacy, she taught diabetes, endocrine disorders, and hypertension therapeutics. During her time in Maine, she practiced at Mid Coast Medical Group Internal Medicine in Bath where she provided diabetes care and education.
Hailey works with Coastal Legal and consults on cases that involve prescription and illicit drugs.
